VOLCANO DAY IN TWO FIRST GRADE CLASSES . . .
June 19th was VOLCANO DAY in Jill Kent's and Jeanne Stearn's first grade classrooms. Parents, grandparents, siblings, teachers and administrators joined students in celebrating the conclusion of an exciting earth science unit by making a volcano together.
The lessons of science should be experimental also. The sight of a planet through a telescope is worth all the course on astronomy; the shock of the electric spark in the elbow outvalues all theories; the taste of the nitrous oxide, the firing of an artificial volcano, are better than volumes of chemistry.

CHARACTER DAY IN CATHERINE KENT'S CLASSROOM
(May 7, 2014) Reading & Writing Project -- Riley students in Catherine Kent's second grade class wrote and acted in a presentation entitled "Parade of Characters". Three narrators presented characters (in costume), who shared an overview of their characters from their favorite books and writers. Can you name the characters PICTURED BELOW and the book that featured them? |
ASTRONOMY MODULE-- SPACE BLAST CELEBRATION
(April 7, 2014) Jeanne Stearns and Jill Kent hosted a “Space Blast” celebration in their first grade classrooms after teaching an Astronomy Module. During the celebration, students and their guests rotated through five centers doing space crafts and puzzles. Did you know that Pluto is no longer considered a planet? Ask a student in one of these classes why and they will be able to tell you. |
